Michelle Orozco Reflection

All the presentations were executed very nicely, however there were a couple things that caught my eye. Most of those things being presentations that included videos and interesting topics. Not everyone is going to find every topic interesting but with the right video I feel it can lure the audience in and make a big difference. There were some presentations lacking things such as interactive Ness. Still this did not affect the way I analyzed each topic in the presentation. Though the presentations with things like videos and pictures did give me a greater understanding. One of my favorite presentations was the last lesson in Chapter 10. It was labeled Group Presentations and was from Group 3. It was about how teamwork is made up of individuals with different individualities and how working together brings new experiences to the table. The slides included few words and a short video explaining the importance of teamwork. What really got me interested was the video, instead of it being a long, informational, and boring. It was a cute video of cartoon characters and the situations they overcame by working together. I know it may seem silly that we as adults are still being affected positively by these little yellow blobs, but you can never be too old to enjoy cartoons. I like how it established a point in a fun way instead of having someone argue their points with a ton of back up information. I know other visual learners can agree with me when I say videos and pictures are a great way to interact with your audience. Another presentation that I was interested in was the one that began with Maintenance Roles, this was also from Group 3. Usually, I’m not into these types of presentations where there’s no interaction, but I like the way she structured the slides. She only wrote keywords and later explained them in further detail without it being written in her slide. I felt like that helped me understand more on the topic. Reading information can be boring but when information is being told to you by someone, it can feel like a personal conversation Therefore, keeping you involved. The last presentation that I enjoyed sitting through was the first person to present in Group 1. She started it off by listing keywords and a picture matching them to each other, I liked this because it helped me make a connection between the word and the picture, furthering my understanding and creating a picture in my head. Then another video was introduced, much like the other video, it wasn’t someone just unloading a ton of information. It was an interactive animated video which was fun to watch and easy to understand. Overall, the videos throughout the entire presentation really helped me understand topics I couldn’t really get before. That was my take on the slide structure aspect of the presentations. Not only did I pick up on my favorite presenters, but I also picked up on some of my favorite topics that were talked about. One of my favorite topics was about Intercultural Communication. I found it really interesting how people from different cultures can relate to one another and share a sense of communication, it creates a bond between them. From the presentations I learned that it helps create shared meaning between the two people. I found out intercultural communication wasn’t just mainly through culture but through values and belief systems. Though the presentation was very good I feel if examples were incorporated more, it would be a lot easier for others to understand. Another topic I found interesting was the topic of sexual orientation. I found it interesting because of how much its importance has evolved during the years. As of right now this world is still having its people with strict mindsets but the 21st century has been the most all-in with this topic. I enjoy this topic because it has been thrown around me for a while. I remember having some friends who were scared to come out with their sexual orientation and seeing how much they’ve grown to this day is amazing. The video that was shown in the presentation was very accurate and inclusive. It talked about the different types of sexual orientations there are and what it means to identify yourself with it. Most importantly the video shows that it is accepting of those who do decide to explore their orientation. The last topic that caught my attention was about Competent Communication Strategies. Before this presentation I had no background knowledge on this topic at all, but I am glad that I was introduced to it. The slides basically consisted of pictures and different types of strategies used to Acquire accurate knowledge and an appropriate attitude when working together. I’ve always struggled with comprehending a subject so listening to these steps helped me in a way. Most times I always just read about a topic and sort of understood the overall meaning without getting deep into it, which is why I always end up forgetting the subject and what it was about. Next time I learn about a certain subject I will try and pursue the steps provided so I can acquire the information and stick with it throughout my life. The slide also talks about an appropriate attitude towards team members. I am not a very social person so this helped me understand certain behaviors and what would be appropriate and what not. Overall, the groups presentations were all beneficial towards the audiencia taught me new skills and I even learned a few new things about topics I was already familiar with. My general understanding has improved after paying attention to everyone’s presentations. The only thing I would recommend to everyone is just adding more pictures, videos, graphs. More interactive items so the audience can better understand the topic and remain engaged with the topic. For a first presentation everyone did great plus they learned new things from others!
